WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said the usa needs more submarines but he needs to get them at a lower cost, resuming his push to get defense contractors to remove the it costs the Pentagon.

"We're lacking submarines and we're visiting build new submarines though the charges are too much so I'm cutting the values way down," Trump said within the interview on Fox News to be broadcast down the road Thursday.

Two U.S.-based companies, General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) Corp's Electric Boat division and Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding, build the Navy's nuclear-powered submarines.

Neither General Dynamics nor Huntington Ingalls immediately answered a request for comment.

"We are spending so much time drive an automobile down cost and tend to be seeing the fruits of your labor," a senior U.S. Navy official said as a result to the Trump comments.

"We have now essentially the most advanced submarines on the globe – the more we buy, greater i will lessen the purchase price," a state said.

Trump, who took office on Friday, has vowed in order to produce the military, that he or she says has grown to become dangerously depleted.
